Mathematics is much more than just the study of numbers; it is also the study of ideas. It has significance and contributes immeasurably to the established order of the world. Talented mathematicians have lifted mathematics to glorious heights in the scientific and economic arena. The efforts of such talented minds have supported the raising of their countries to brilliant levels of achievement.
In the past mathematics has been used in building houses and bridges. In fact, wherever a country has succeeded technologically in the past, one can always pinpoint mathematics as being responsible.
Moving to the present day, one important field where mathematical logic reigns supreme in technological advancement is in the area of computation. Programming is mathematical logic in action. In short, in this computer age, scientific researches are becoming more and more dependent on mathematics for important breakthroughs in theories. Computers are not replacing mathematicians, in fact computer technology is making it more necessary to train mathematicians; for it may take a computer less than a few seconds to solve a difficult problem, but it may have taken a group of gifted mathematicians many months to help program the problem for the computer.
Also, It is well known that the whole area of medicine is been supported by mathematicians armed with strange statistical techniques for designing experiments, analyzing data, predicting probable results in areas such as clinical trials, DNA experiments and computer-assisted major operations.
It is also with the effective use of mathematics (i.e calculus) that a radiology technician could accurately pinpoint or target the positioning and dosage of chemotherapy. Therefore radiologists can make more accurate diagnoses to assist in computer-assisted surgery to avoid less invasive procedures using this pinpointing formula.
A country therefore has a task as well as a duty to search for problems, solutions and evaluate results. The end product will then be a greater understanding for everyone and the entire nation benefits as a result.
