Connected Development holds a Town Hall meeting with stakeholders in the state to discuss the findings of the research it conducted the status of the primary healthcare centers in the state as well as to discuss the challenges facing the primary healthcare sector with a view to providing solution to the problem, the meeting is part of the activities of the COVID-19 Transparency and Accountability Project C-TAP conducted across the country. The townhall meeting held at MCHC Kofar Sauri in Katsina local government had in attendance the Executive Secretary of Katsina State Primary HealthCare Agency Dr Shamsuddeen Yahaya, traditional rulers, civil society organizations, media and other relevant stakeholders. In the report presentation by the State Lead Yahaya Saidu Lugga, it shows that In Katsina State specifically out of about 170 PHCs, 23 PHCs were sampled from 8 Local Governments of the State namely Katsina,Batagarawa, Mani, Mashi, Malumfashi, Funtua,Bakori, Kafur.
After 4 months of field work and data analysis key findings from the research shows that only 52% of the PHCs visited have access to clean and portable water, thus relying on water from sources like wells stored in tanks, only 30% of the PHCs are connected to national grid others supplement natural light with lanterns and torch light. 57% of the PHCs have a functional laboratory, only 17% of the PHCs met the standard requirement for nurses and midwives, 57% of the PHCs provide ante natal care services, 74% of the PHCs have separate toilet for male and female, and 22% of the PHCs have ward development committee.
Connected Development recommends that the National Primary Healthcare Development Agency (NPHCDA) should set up a strong monitoring and evaluation team that would routinely track PHCs to ensure that they maintain the minimum standard as stipulated by the agency, The NPHCDA must ensure that all PHCs have the capacity to host, store and administer vaccines, The healthcare system must be strengthened to be able to efficiently respond to health emergencies, Budget allocation for the Healthcare need to be increased, Government at subnational level need to implement the Basic Healthcare Provision Fund (BHCPF)
The Executive Secretary Katsina State Primary HealthCare Agency Dr Shamsuddeen Yahaya informed the meeting of giant strides undertaken by the Government to improve Human resource for health by employing adequate healthcare workers, service delivery and health infrastructure.
Stakeholders at the townhall meeting thanks the organization for conducting the research in the state describing it as a commendable Initiative. Other stakeholders also made commitment to follow up on the implementation of the recommendations of the report.
